5 Signs You Should Never Ignore: Oral Cancer Awareness Month

April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, and at Pine Cove Family & Implant Dentistry, we are on a mission to save lives through early detection. Oral cancer is often called a "silent" disease because its early stages can be painless and easy to miss. However, when caught early, the survival rate increases significantly.
Here are the 5 warning signs you should never ignore.
1. Sores That Won’t Heal
Everyone gets a canker sore now and then, but a healthy mouth typically heals within 10–14 days. If you have a sore on your lips, gums, or inside your cheek that lingers longer than two weeks, it needs a professional look.
2. Persistent Red or White Patches
Keep an eye out for patches of color (Leukoplakia or Erythroplakia) that don't belong.
White Patches: Often flat and painless, but they shouldn't be there.
Red Patches: These are statistically more likely to be precancerous and may have a velvety texture.
3. Lumps or Thickening of Tissue
Run your tongue along your gums and cheeks. If you feel a "bump," a hard spot, or an area that feels unusually thick compared to the rest of your mouth, don't wait for it to hurt. Many early-stage lumps are completely painless.
4. Difficulty Swallowing or Speech Changes
If you feel like something is "stuck" in your throat, or if you notice a sudden hoarseness in your voice that isn't related to a cold, it could be a sign of changes in the throat or pharynx.
5. Unexplained Numbness or Pain
Loss of sensation in your tongue, lips, or jaw is a major red flag. This often indicates that a growth is pressing against a nerve. Similarly, persistent earaches without an actual ear infection can sometimes be "referred pain" from the oral cavity.
Importance of Professional Screenings at Pine Cove Dental
While being aware of the five signs listed above is a vital first step, self-exams are not a replacement for a professional clinical evaluation. Many precancerous lesions are invisible to the naked eye or located in areas of the mouth that are difficult to see at home.
Regular dental visits are your strongest line of defense. During your routine check-up, we don't just look for cavities; we perform a comprehensive oral cancer screening to identify cellular changes long before they become symptomatic.
Enhanced Detection with VELscope® Technology
At Pine Cove Dental, we utilize the VELscope® VX, an advanced wireless handheld device that helps us see what might otherwise remain hidden. This specialized light allows us to:
Identify abnormal tissue that isn't visible under standard white light.
Detect early-stage changes in the mouth's mucous membranes.
Provide a non-invasive, painless, and quick "blue-light" exam that can literally save lives.
Special Oral Cancer Awareness Month Offer
To honor Oral Cancer Awareness Month and ensure our community stays healthy:
New Patients: Your VELscope® screening is complimentary during your initial visit.
Returning Patients: For all patients scheduled in the month of April, we are providing this enhanced screening for free.
