What is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)?

Our blood consists of red and white blood cells, plasma, and platelets. Plasma is a mixture of water, salts, fats, and sugars. The primary role of plasma is to transport blood cells, vital nutrients, and platelets throughout the body. Platelets are an essential component of the body's healing process. They work by adhering to the walls of damaged blood vessels and forming a clot. Ultimately, this rehabilitates the wound. When the plasma is enriched with platelets, the body is able to form clots more effectively, and ultimately, heal faster. PRP stimulates the production of both platelet-derived growth factor and transforming factor-beta. These two proteins stimulate tissue growth more quickly and effectively.  Medical professionals have utilized this information to develop PRP therapy. While many are familiar with PRP therapy roles in sports injections, facials, and hair restoration, PRP can be used in a dental setting as well. The popularity of PRP therapy has increased among dentists and oral surgeons due to its ability to enhance healing in various dental surgeries.

How does it work?

While the name may sound complicated, the procedure of acquiring PRP is simple. Initially, a blood sample will be acquired from the patient and centrifuged. This process separates the blood into distinct layers. The superior layer contains the patient’s plasma with a high concentration of platelets. This portion of the vial will be removed and used in a variety of ways depending on the dental procedure. At Pine Cove Dental, we utilize PRP with our dental implants and other surgical procedures. It’s important to note that because the substance is taken directly from the patient the risk of complications and negative side effects is minimal.

Who is the best candidate?

Due to the low risk of infection and safety, most people are well-suited candidates for PRP. This therapy technique allows individuals to heal and return to their daily activities quicker than those who did not receive PRP therapy. Older patients may want to especially consider PRP therapy. As we age, our bodies regenerate slower. Specifically, we produce fewer growth factors as we age. PRP therapy supplements the deficit of growth factors and enables older patients to have an accelerated recovery period.
